Carbon Footprint Reduction
As a small business, we strive to be as eco-conscious as possible, and we have taken multiple steps to reduce our carbon footprint as individuals, and as a business, through how we operate, manufacture, and fulfill your orders.
Packing Material
We avoid using plastic or Styrofoam filler material, and instead our primary filler and cushion material consists of loose packing paper, honeycomb packing paper & eco-friendly biodegradable packing peanuts made from corn.
Boxes
Our primary boxes are corrugated mailer that fold together, and require only one edge to be sealed. This helps avoid excess waste, only needing one part of the container to be taped shut. For the time being, we are using an adhesive tape to seal that one edge, but this is the superior option to other options, like paper tape, for a few reasons. Unfortunately, much of the paper tape is not industrially recyclable, as it is reinforced with fiberglass strands that are difficult to remove and have a complex recycling process. Paper tape, although widely used in an attempt to be more eco-friendly, is a major failure point in shipping, as it is not nearly as sturdy as traditional tape. Paper tape rips and loses adhesive more easily, potentially causing damage and more waste during shipping, and is many times rectified with regular shipping tape placed over it when it does fail. So, although it may not be ideal, we feel like traditional tape is still the most productive and effective way to seal a package and have less waste in the end.
Plastic Wrapped Products
Some of our products may come encased in what looks like plastic wrap. For this wrap, we use a film product called Biolifin. This is a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic wrap material that can take up to hundreds of years or more to naturally degrade, and when they do, they leave behind harmful microplastics within the earth. Biolifin biodegrades quickly, within 12-18 months under the right conditions, is industrially compostable, and breaks down into biomass plant food rather than harmful micro plastics.
The Journey Ahead
Although there is still a long ways to go in our carbon footprint reduction, we believe we are on the right track, and making necessary changes as we go. We are also always open to suggestions and new ideas on how to improve, so please feel free to voice your opinions and ideas. We do listen!
